Artist Statement

Rosalie M. López is a Los Angeles based artist whose work involves combining cultural iconography with references of her everyday surroundings. Her images highlight and recognize the strength and beauty of her community and the everyday. She primarily uses printmaking, papel picado, installation, and the altar/offering to relay experiences of survival, loss, and pride.

Rosalie M. López was raised in Gardena, CA and lived in South Los Angeles during her early adulthood. Born to a Chicana mother and a Mexican father, her upbringing influenced her values on culture and community. At a young age she was heavily impacted with the realities of loss, addictions, and violence within her immediate family, which continue to shape her perspectives on society and culture.

López earned a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Indiana University and dual Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in graphic design and printmaking from California State University, Long Beach. López has exhibited at venues such as the National Hispanic Cultural Center (Albuquerque, N.M.), the Mexican Cultural Institute (Los Angeles, Calif.), the Indianapolis Art Center (Indianapolis, Ind.), Avenue 50 Studios (Highland Park, Los Angeles, CA) and Self Help Graphic & Art (Boyle Heights, Calif.).
